More artists' books

Tidying up my studio, I found a shoe box with some more of my earlier book making efforts.  So I have added a few more pictures to my Bookbinding Gallery page.

Paper Globe

Fascinating paper engineering - just had to try this one out.  The Youtube instructions are very clear and you can download a printed template to get you started.

This was made from Hattifant's paper globe template

Pop-up Accordion

This book is a recent acquisition, with instructions on how to make over 30 different folded books and paper structures.

This is my attempt at the pop-up accordion in Chapter 8.  I had done a dummy run on plain paper, but thought it might be interesting to add pattern.  I drew out a single panel, scanned, repeated it, then printed on A3 computer paper, keeping my fingers crossed that my cutting and folding would all line up OK.

Unfolded size approx. 16" x 8"

Bookbinding and Artists' Books

I have added another section to the Pages sidebar showing some of the handmade books I have produced over the years.  Do have a look.

Valentine's Day

A slightly larger version of the folded strip structure.  I used a lino block I had made some time ago (3.5" square) so I was only able to print 4 images across my strip of A3 paper.  A scrap of black card came in handy for making the triangular box.  Unfortunately, the folds had been creased so well, they didn't spring open as well as my previous attempt.

Urban sketching

Due to a reasonable fall of snow yesterday, I missed out on our urban sketch meeting in Town.  Bus services were erratic due to "hazardous conditions" and the church we had arranged to visit was at the top of a very steep hill.  The road had been re-opened after yesterday's closure, but the pavements were likely to be treacherous.  So I had to content myself with a chilly walk nearer to home - a manmade lagoon and a small wooded area.  I managed a very quick pencil sketch of a decorative pagoda - built some years ago to complement a nearby large Chinese restaurant.  It is isolated on a small island and, sadly, is falling into disrepair.
